Can anyone recommend a sewing machine. I'm a complete beginner but plan on making patchwork quilts etc.

It depends on your budget, and whether you want one with whistles and bells on. You'll want a walking foot for quilting, and a large throat if you want to make huge quilts. I love my Janome ☺

Something sturdy. Depends on your budget. You can normally get something good on sale. I have a singer that I love. I prefer a simple machine because I worry about what can go wrong with the fancy machines.

Doesn't need to be too fancy. Would like to do single bed sized so would need a big gap. I think that's what you mean by throat anyway!

Not a massive budget. £150ish

A single bed sized quilt can be quilted on a machine with standard throat space (with a bit of a wriggle) ☺
