Happyclappy20 · 24/06/2019 13:24

I did a 3 hour complete beginners crochet course last week. I can do chain which but struggled with the double! Have watched bellacoco vids but still struggling! Is it possible to get good or do I just not have a natural affinity with it!

It is entirely possible to get good at it with perseverance. Unless you usually struggle with this kind of thing?

Whereabouts ar you, roughly, someone might be able to suggest somewhere for face to face classes or offer to help you in exchange for cake :)

I taught myself to crochet last year, a combination of Bella Coco videos & a book of crochet for beginners.

Thank you for the suggestions!

You will be fine. I did a similar course then cocked up loads when trying by myself. Persevere. You will click with it I promise you.

I learnt watching Bella Coco but my technique is completely different to hers- I wrap the yarn over the hook with my free hand (sort of like if I was knitting) instead of catching it on the hook the way she does. I tried to do it her way and it just ended up a big loose mess!

The Happy Hooker is a good book to learn from as well.

Don't freak out about how you hold your yarn.

I struggled for AGES watching YouTube videos because they kept telling me how to hold the yarn. Until I thought "sod it, I'll just hold the yarn how I like" and then it got easier.

I tried Bella but for some reason I couldn't "click" and so just googled different YouTube tutorials until I found someone I "got" and then I whizzed along! There are HUNDREDS out there.

If you can chain u can do it. Bella coco videos are really good. It’s all about practice to get the stitches more uniform. Just keep going with it!

Think I'll give these a try - still struggling! I'm sooo slow!

My DD taught herself during lockdown using the bellacoco videos. She's about halfway through a jumper she started over half term last week! It's worth persevering.

Keep going with it and you'll get there. If you're finding it too stressful think if it's something you really want to learn. I enjoy the I guess mindfulness of crochet but wouldn't bother if I didn't find that. Maybe find a simple granny square pattern to make so you feel you've achieved something.
