Knitting toys with that weirdy sock yarn - possible?

so they end up something like this?
I suppose they'd have to be knitted in the round on scary double-ended needles?

Any tips on good pattern sources? All the animals I've seen are either enormous or made up piece by piece - am looking for 6-8" high I guess.

(am not an expert knitter by any means but now my bus commute has extended to 2hrs through the floods I thought I might as well make use of the time...)

There's some interesting stuff on this site here, I've done the crochet bunny on the free pats here and you could search the lionbrand site for free knit patterns, they have some interesting stuff.
