Where to get a costume made to a very specific idea

I have looked on local websites, asked around in costume shops, done loads of searches etc but can’t seem to get exactly what I need.
It’s for dd age 10 who has autism and a very specific idea about a Tinkerbell costume, basically it has to be the same as the film/toy she has which seems quite simple to make.
I’m unable to sew as can’t hold needle due to disabilities myself and am struggling to find anyone else who could do it.
Would be very grateful for recommendations, ideas but don’t want to pay too much as it’s purely for dressing up/cosplay!

Can you put up a picture so we can see how complicated it is?

Alakazam8 · 08/05/2019 09:32

Yes sure I think it’s quite simple really but because it’s got no shoulders they don’t seem to make them. That’s the way she wants it though

Hmm, I was thinking about offering to give it a go, but I think the strapless aspect makes it too hard for me. If the fit isn't perfect it's going to fall down. You probably need someone better than me.

What about using those clear plastic bra straps that were all the rage in the '00s? They must still exist? Would that cut it with your DD though?

reetgood · 08/05/2019 14:27

You need a dressmaker for that really, and it will probably cost more than you’d want! It would need to be fitted to her with a structured bodice. Totally possible, but if it’s custom you’re paying for someone’s time and that’s always a bit pricy.

Hem!!!

Alakazam8 · 08/05/2019 14:37

I think it could have thin elastic straps as she will have wings around her shoulders anyway. Does that make it easier for anyone to have a go at at all? Will pm if better

For a dressing up dress I don’t really want to have to pay for a structured bodice and have it fitted to her.
It might be an idea to have an existing dress altered if that would work. Will search for a shoulderless green dress which might work or would I be better to get an actual Tinkerbell costume altered. It’s much more complicated than I thought !!

The problem is that a 10 year old doesn't have the boobs which are needed for a strapless dress to stay up. Especially as the picture looks to have a very low back too. Agree that clear plastic straps are a good option, if she'd agree to it.

Ravingstarfish · 26/05/2019 17:51

You could use clear straps as a halter neck. Would she mind that?

RitaTheBeater · 26/05/2019 17:56

I wonder if you could use a stretch fabric. Like a boob tube type affair.

Singleandproud · 26/05/2019 18:01

You could get someone to make it with the skin colour, tight-like material used for leotards. In fact if you asked in your local dance / material shop they may know a local person who could make it.

Hellbentwellwent · 26/05/2019 18:04

Green sparkle Lycra for the dress and fill in the back with dance mesh, if she’d tolerate it you could even have the dance mesh up over her shoulders with sleeves set in, you can get sparkle dance mesh which would look awesome

Singleandproud · 26/05/2019 18:07

Ahhh...dance mesh. I knew there would be a proper name for it instead of “tight-like material”!

Hellbentwellwent · 26/05/2019 18:09

Power net is the technical term

Alakazam8 · 26/05/2019 18:48

Brilliant.powernet will do it. Thank you so much for that. I’d got has far as having one made but they put straps on it!!! Hmm So finding someone who can alter it- they could use powernet! Thanks again
