urgent help needed with buttonholes on a pocket flap!

I'm making a jumper for dd that has a pocket on the front with a pocket flap. The flap has 3 buttons on it and is done ina k2 p2 rib. The pattern details the row for making the buttonhole (ie where to cast off 2 sts etc) the following row to "close" the buttonhole it says rib to end casting on 2sts over those cast off on previous rows. Every time i try this the rib goes wrong (even when keeping the pattern) its as though the casting on twists the rib pattern. Am I being really thick (probably!) but i'm stuck now (even contemplating doing a flap without buttons!!!). Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks

How are you casting on the extra stitches? I'll look for my montse and see if there are techniques recommended ...

When I do cast-on/off buttonholes I rib to the hole then turn and cast on the right number of stitches using cable cast-on, then turn back round again. Seems to work fine.

thanks everyone - the turning and casting on and turning back round worked a treat. Thanks again!
