Knitting pattern for child's beanie

Hello clever crafters! I'm looking for a simple pattern for a child's beanie, aged 3 yrs. I've no idea of the average head circumference for that age. I'll be using chunky yarn and can make it up as I go along if I know the number of stitches to cast on. Alternatively I can use DK so the number of stitches would differ. Any advice? Tia!

If you aren't a member already then join Ravelry. It's a free website with thousands of knitting and crochet patterns - many of them are free.

You can filter by age and yarn and get photos of the finished article to help you choose. I very rarely buy a pattern without checking Ravelry first.

This one is sweet if you can cable.

I forgot to mention that Ravelry is an American site so some terminology will be different. The hat above uses "bulky" yarn but if you check the recommended needle size with the needles recommended on your yarn ball band and they are the same then you are good to go.

Sorry, I should have been more explicit, what I really need is the no. of stitches to cast on for an average 3 year old's head. I would love to learn to cable but it's beyond me at the moment. Just a quick knit is what I'm looking for. Thanks to the responders.

But that depends on the size of needles you are going to use and how tightly you knit, and what stitch you intend to use...

If you do it in rib, it will be stretchier and the size isn't so important.

If the child likes Sarah and Duck there's a pattern for Sarah's hat on the BBC website
