It’s an easy baby cardigan and the bit I’m stuck on is the button hole.

The instructions were
K to last 5sts, cast off 3sts, K1
Next row: K2, cast on 3sts, k to the end.

It’s the cast on bit I’m finding tricky. No matter what I do I seem to have the wool going across the hole from the first two stitches.
Is there a way to cast on to the right needle to stop this?

Can you type 'knitting a button hole' into you tube?

Ok, so it's a buttonhole. Knit the 2 stitches, then turn your work, (so the two stitches just knitted are in your left hand) then put your needle between the two and cast on the stitches as normal. When you have cast them on, turn your work back (the right way round, as you started the row), and knit to the end.

Hope this helps!

I did try YouTube but the first few videos didn’t help.
Sometimes it’s helpful to take advice from actual people.

Thank you Lonely. That did the trick.

Yes, Lonely is right. Sometimes I wonder if the person who writes the pattern actually ever tries it.

I wondered if it was just assumed that this was stuff you know. But this is a beginners book.

Orchard - I only discovered recently that many designers don’t knit their patterns. My friend test knits for someone who never does!
