How much double knit wool???

I visit an elderly lady who knits a lot for charity eg woman's refuges and Oxfam. I'd like to add some wool to a little pack of Christmas gifts for her, hence not wanting to ask her! How much double knit wool is needed eg to knit a simple jumper for a small child - say 5-6 years? Thanks
