Knitting a throw

Hello everyone, I am a not very experienced knitter but can cast on and off!

I would like to knit a throw for a sofa. Have you suggestions, please on a pattern - would like to knit squares or strips, and what type of wool would be best. If possible, I would prefer to have a little variety of stitch from square to square. Thank you
