I decided to teach myself to knit this week and I'm going alright so far. Nearly finished a chunky knit scarf that dosent have too many dropped stitches!

I'm going past a wool shop tomorrow so want to buy some more ready to get started on my next thing. Can you recommend me a super easy project to try? I've only done knit stitch so far so maybe something that will let me practice purling?

I have one pair of 9mm needles and one 5mm.

Thanks!

Join Ravelry if you haven't already done so. It's free to sign up and it's a great resource for patterns, yarns and inspiration.

If that link works properly then that should show the results of my search for a hat pattern for you. The initial search term of "Beanie" gave thousands of patterns but I was able to filter the search down to 20-30 by using parameters such as:
'Free'
'9 mm needles'
'Worked flat' - some hats are worked on circular needles.
'Difficulty' I looked for simple patterns.

I like knitting hats. There's only one seam so I sew it up using the tails from my cast on and cast off and as my children have all had big heads it's easier to knit them a hat that fits.

Make a pussy hat!

It's super easy and you can do any colour, they're not just for protesting Trump.
