Sewing machine recommendations?

Hello, can anyone recommend a brand/make/model of sewing machine? What should I look for or avoid? I feel like a complete beginner although I dabbled a bit well over 20years ago. I'd like to have a go at making things like pants, reusable nappies, etc. I'm not a big researcher and very much learn by doing so I'd really appreciate some input so I don't spend a few hundred pounds on a mistake!

I've been looking at sewing machines today. I tested several brands but liked the Janome best. This was for computerised machines but I would look at maybe a £200ish one for a first machine. Try to find a sewing shop where you can try them out, not John Lewis.

Janome definitely. They have a day coming up soon with 10% off the current offers running if you can find a stockist.

Thanks for the replies. Trying things out isn't my style, I'm an impulse buyer! Thanks so much, I'll see if there is any local to me.

I’m looking for one too as my current Toyota machine is about dead - the tension messes up constantly and sometimes it just won’t sew.

What is good about Janome? When I was googling Brother came up most often for a cheap-ish, reliable machine.
