Washing/ironing cross stitch

Is it necessary? I've just completed a sampler with my DD's name and birthday (so hoping it will be something she will keep as she gets older). It was a kit I was given as a gift, just one of those in a paper bag (so no particular brand) and I'm slightly worried about the threads running. Could this happen? I should say, it has been folded so will need to get the creases out somehow.

Persfinally I wouldn't bother washing it. Just iron it carefully
