How much yarn for a super chunky blanket?

I'm desperate to crochet something NOW
I'm aiming to make a single blanket with two colours. I need something simple that works up quickly but have no idea how much yarn to buy (or even which pattern to use)

Any suggestions please?

Where is good to buy yarn with quick delivery too?

I love the look of the new Stylecraft "Cosy" yarn. It's shaded so would add colour without needing to buy more than one colour IYSWIM. It's on my list for my next project. Anything that cuts down the number of loose ends to see in at the end is a winner in my book.

Attic24 does lovely simple blanket patterns. She usually works in DK but I think with a blanket you could just chain the length you need in your chosen yarn and then carry on following the pattern. As long as you had the basics right you could work any of her row by row patterns - eg if she says you need a multiple of 3 chains +1 and uses 200 chains for a DK blanket you could have 172 chains for a chunky blanket and still follow the same pattern as you just finish when it is long enough. (Numbers made up, but I hope you get the gist).

There have been some gorgeous blankets made for the Woolly Hugs Chernobyl project that might give you some inspiration. Pictures are on the FB and instagram accounts. If you find one you like I can try to help you trace the pattern.

Do you want to make a blanket in a single piece, or in squares? I assume if you want to do it quickly you'll want to go for a single piece. WoollybacksWife is right, Attic24 has popularised the ripple pattern although Very Pink has demonstrated a slightly different version called the which she does in chunky yarn. Wool Warehouse is my go-to for buying yarn, if you do so quickly today it will probably be dispatched same day.

I also like Greyson (three colours) and I like the feather and fan variation on ripple which Attic24 did recently.

In terms of how much yarn you'll need, if you choose something v mainstream like Stylecraft, you can buy some now to get you started and then when you've got a better idea of how much you'll need, you'll be able to buy some more without worrying about dye lots meaning it doesn't match exactly.

I've discovered that a cheap corner shop here has a whole wall of wool. Went in for something else and was flabbergasted!

I found attic24 yesterday, showed dd the moorland stripe attic24.typepad.com/weblog/moorland-stripe-blanket.html and she fell instantly in love with it. So I ordered the wool but it's not here yet dammit and now I have about five weeks to crochet a whole blanket in dk. Yikes!!! I don't think that's going to happen.

I think I'll practice the rhythm today on some spare wool.

I'm so glad I discovered crochet though, it's so much easier than knitting for me.

Aah! A university blanket I have made a few of those in my time. DD1 still has hers on her bed and she's home and working now. DD2 will be packing hers when she leaves next month.

Most modern halls of residence are hotter than Hades but a blanket to snuggle under is still a fantastic idea. Perfect for when the duvet would be too much or if she's feeling a bit under the weather (pun intended OYBBK).

She may be in a very old creaky building, not sure yet. She was adamant that I shouldn't make her anything, as soon as she got her results she decided it was a good idea. Hence emergency crochet situation! (plus it may be a displacement reverse nesting thing for me)
