Bunting for birthday cards

I'm making a birthday card for my friend and would like to put some bunting on it.

1- what do you make the bunting triangles from? Paper? Card?
2- what do you use as the string for it?

I went to a craft shop today and the only string they had was far too thick.

I've made cards with the bunting made out of paper and out of material.

With the paper (The red card below) they were hung with regular string, but they didn't move well, they were quite stiff.

I hung the fabric triangles (Purple and green card) by sewing them together with white cotton which I tied to the posts (cocktail sticks), these moved a lot better
