To Jelly Roll or not to Jelly Roll....

Hello to the MN quilt n' patchwork enthusiasts out there. Are Jelly Rolls worth the money? I've been binge watching Missouri Quilt Co. on YT and I'm a tad dubious that all the fabric in the bundle is perfectly co-ordinated. Has anyone felt a bit ripped off with certain brands? TIA

I love jelly rolls, I think sometimes there’s a colour or pattern you don’t like but they’re so thin and match so well that you don’t notice in the end result. I’ve always had the same number of each pattern/colour so it’s not like you get one nice piece and lots of ugly pieces. You can also look online so you know exactly what to expect. I love Craftsy and every January spend an absolute fortune on fabric from there lol

Watching this - I have used charm packs (some gorgeous Moda ones) but not jelly rolls.

Have a look at the Jelly Roll Quilts books by Pam and Nicky Lintott. They’re very well explained and talk you through some complicated projects.
My gripe with JR is that 2.5 inches is about the smallest width I’m prepared to work with, so I would still buy at least one of the fabrics in a larger amount. And yes, there are usually 42 different strips in a JR, so nothing really stands out as a contrast or highlight.

Lastly, what to do with the lovely scraps?
I bought a booklet of 20 things to make and I’ve made pincushions, fabric boxes, tissue pouches and drawstring bags, but the projects are tiny.

I think Jelly Rolls are going a bit out of fashion- they don’t seem so widely available online as a few years ago, but Moda is the main producer. Their cotton is always strong and colour fast.
It can be expensive but if you think how many hours of work you’re putting in, cheap inconsistent fabrics are just false economy. Same for thread.

I like traditional fabrics so when Moda does collaborations with the V&A archives I’ll be interested, or French General, or 3 Sisters designers. But there are really modern designers, too.

I use them all the time, love them, makes life so easy, have combined with layer cakes too. The lintoft books are fabulous, I really want to go to Missouri 😁
