I'm desperately searching to find a fabric to have some soft school trousers made for my autistic son so need a fabric shop with a lot of choice. I'm near Croydon and have no idea where to begin. I also need to find the fabric next week and don't have a lot of time to visit lots of shops so if anyone knows somewhere big nearby I'd appreciate the recommendation! Thank you :)

Are you looking for grey flannel
If you are in central London for any reason soho is a good place to hunt Jermyn st fitzrovia Berwick st all have shops with tailor quality fabric.
mccullough and wallis or Berwick st cloth shop may well have what you want st it won't be mega cheap though

Mad jax in shere may have what you want or fabrics galore in Clapham maybe call in advance
They are the only ones I can think of
Maybe fabric land or John Lewis in Kingston
Or you might find what you want at a market.

To be honest I don't know what fabric I am looking for. It has to be dark charcoal so it looks similar to the trousers the other kids wear but needs to be softer than the polyester/viscose blend normal school trousers are made of. Is flannel ok to make trousers from? The seamstress is going to need to make them part elasticated with a false fly on the front so they look the same. She's told me I need to bring material but I have no idea where to start!

Thanks for the suggestions.

Sewing and Craft Superstore on Balham High Rd is massive and the staff are helpful sewingandcraftsuperstore.wordpress.com/come-and-visit/
Or if there’s a Fabricland near you they’re quite good - there’s one in Kingston www.fabricland.co.uk/product-category/buy-fabric-online/

Have you tried any of the online fabric retailers? Most have v helpful customer care and will send out samples. I've used Minerva Crafts before - this might work?

Cotton poplin, flannel, possibly a good linen but only for the first half of the term. if you are looking online merchant and mills in Rye do some lovely natural fabrics that hold well
But really given your son's needs it's probably better to go somewhere that you and possibly he can feel the fabric
