Bay windows and curtains - how would you do them?

Not sure whether this is the right place to post this. We have some bay windows in our living room and I have worked out that the material for the curtains (if the track goes in and around the bay windows) is going to be horrendously expensive. I have seen a picture where bay windows with french doors (iyswim) had the curtains on a pole going straight across the opening, rather than into it.

Is there a conventional way to do it? If not, do you have any opinions on what would look best? Would be stymied by this at the best of times, but am suffering pregnancy indecision... And the material is too expensive to get it wrong!!

Thanks!

I think its going to have to be personal choice tbh.

I've got the same problem. My bay window is 11ft wide and I had thought of going straight across, but the amount of space I would loose was too much. A friend of mine did hers straight across and it looked really good, but then her bay wasn't as deep as mine.
I also had the added problem that I only wanted 1 pair of curtains and not 2 iyswim. Because it is so wide & went round corners, the only track I could get was a bendy one and I wanted someting posh. In the end dh welded 3 pieces of decorative iron together to make one track.

So no help at all really, sorry!

We have cheap bendy track round the bay, but the ceiling in the bay is lower than in the room (iyswim) and the track is right up against the ceiling so you barely see it.

Pole across the opening can seriously cut down your floor space.

Blinds?

Get cheaper material and go round the bay.

We have just had curtains made and ours are on a track that goes in and around the bay window and french doors. I must say that they look fab and I am well chuffed. Looking at them now I'm not sure a pole on the outside would look as good and would also make the room much smaller. Hope that helps.

We also have cheap bendy pole, and it does look ok. MIL made the curtains and there was so much material it nearly drove her to the brink bless her

What about blinds but then have a straight across pole with curtains that dont pull, so you have a double dressing. I think the curtains can finish it off nicely.

Or, another friend has a huge bay and used plain cheaper material for the majority and then some really nice expensive patterned material to make panels down the outside edges, it looked lovely. Or you could do some panels along the bottom.

I think the general consensus is that going straight across with curtains won't look that good - which is what I rather suspected. The bay is quite deep and just over 2m wide. Quite like the idea of mixing the curtain fabric up. Will have to give it more thought...
