Want to learn to sew

Unfortunately can not get to a class locally due to childcare and work so am looking at online courses. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Also what basic kit do I need and where can I get some modern patterns?

I’ve just done my first piece of embroidery- a floral design with a swear work in the middle!

Do you mean clothes sewing?

Do you have a sewing machine or would this be by hand?
There are loads of youtube tutorials but my best advice would be to take it easy and start simple. My DD has got some simple patterns and they really do spell it out quite clearly.
If you are starting with a machine do loads of practice on rough material first with all the stitches. With my DD I drew some lines on a rough bit of material, squares, squiggles and very large zig zags and got her to follow ties lines on the machine just to practice. Then when it came to the really thing she had developed some stills.
Oh, and very important get a Quickunpick. You will make mistakes but you can unpick easily and have another go!

Love at First Stitch is a good book and has lots of basic projects and photos, and then some more advanced blouses and dresses. The sizing system actually goes up to a UK 20 but it is numbered differently to encourage people to measure.

You need a sewing machine (Argos do some good basic Brother machines), thread, fabric scissors, needles, measuring tape, a stitch unpicker, pins, and tailors chalk. If you get into it then a cutting mat and cutting wheel are really worth it. Aldi often do some great sewing kits in boxes if you look out for them.
