Anyone got any ideas where I can get hold of scraps of material?

DD1 has requested a bag of scraps to work with (for her birthday) now that she has learnt to sew. However, I don't have one and I tend to pass on/recycle clothes that are outgrown. So was wondering if anyone's got any ideas where I can pick some up? Thanks!

Often fabric shops sell bags of bits too ! Or you could buy a few off cuts and chop them up smaller maybe ?

KathyMCMLXXII · 09/05/2007 18:02

I have a scrap bag full of clothes that are too crap to go to the charity shop because I know from experience that they can only sell stuff in good condition.
I bet you anything that if you ask at a charity shop they will have been given lots of stuff that is too crap to sell - people are not always selective in what they give them....

Oh - I should add - it's probably worth spending money on a bag of some felt pieces, though, because felt's so easy to work with.

bettys · 09/05/2007 18:28

Post a request for scraps on Freecycle - someone's just done this on our local one as they're making a Coat of Many Colours.

PestoMonster · 09/05/2007 18:34

Ooh thank you everybody! I just popped out to do tea and now loads of fab ideas. Thank you all so much.

Pestomonster, I'm about to throw out a whole load of material scraps - will post some to you if you like (unless you have already been inundated!). Might be an idea to let me know what you might like so I can narrow it down - I literally have a binbag full!

Also I am selling some felt squares in the for sale section if you are interested

PestoMonster · 10/05/2007 21:47

Can I email you with my address Miaow? I would only want a smallish bag/large envelope full of material offcuts.

You can pesto, but I'm not able to CAT you atm (not paid ) and I don't want to put my email address up on the site - have you got CAT facility?

SoupDragon · 11/05/2007 09:38

Miaou, email me, I've got Pesto's address. iamsoupdragon at blueyonder dot co dot uk

PestoMonster · 11/05/2007 09:49

Thanks Soupdragon!
BTW, what is CAT?

"Crap Warehouse"! PMSL - sounds like my house after DTs birthday.

SoupDragon · 11/05/2007 10:46

Contact Another Talker. It's the little envelope icon on the blue bar that appears above a post.

Do you have a department store nearby? Our John Lewis has a fabric department full of curtain and upholstery fabric. When we first moved house I requested heaps of samples as we were doing up loads of rooms. Voila!
