Where can I get REALLY fine wool for scarves?

Really, really fine. Every website I go on just has medium weights which they describe as good for suiting/dresses

LaurieFairyCake · 09/02/2018 16:09

Do you have a pattern?

LaurieFairyCake · 09/02/2018 16:11

I want to make a scarf. I’ve fallen in love with a £150 scarf which is light grey wool but it’s way too expensive for me

Ah just clicked the link - I mean woven wool not for knitting

Ohhhhhhhh

You could probably get a loom?!

LaurieFairyCake · 09/02/2018 16:14

I am NOT buying a loom !Grin

Dunnes Stores cashmere. It's beautiful and very fine.

MulhuddartDrive · 09/02/2018 16:21

It's also darker IRL than in the photo where it looks oatmealy.

LaurieFairyCake · 09/02/2018 16:23

That’s very lovely. Would like longer, at least 200cm - my favourite scarf is 250 as I can wrap round and then tie nicely. They never make scarves long enough.

How about?

It's hard to tell from the pic but they will send out 5 samples so you can get an idea if it'll suit. It says it would do shirts so it might be light enough in weight if not in colour.

Backenette · 09/02/2018 16:34

Shetland lace weight. jamiesons and Smith sell it. You can pull a six foot shawl through a wedding ring

Or do you mean fabric?

LaurieFairyCake · 09/02/2018 16:42

I mean fabric, not wool for knitting

I’ve been on that Croft mill site and they have lovely fabrics Flavia - I think they might be thicker than I want if it makes shirts - you’re right I’m only going to know if I order some samples

Woven or jersey type wool?

Budget?

FlaviaAlbia · 09/02/2018 16:47

TK Maxx had some beautiful wool scarves in light grey for about £16, they were so fine you could see though them.

I don't think they would be as long as you'd like though but the fabric must be out there somewhere if they're using them. They were an Italian brand if that's any use.

FlaviaAlbia · 09/02/2018 16:54

I've got interested in this now, I love the idea. From looking at the blurb on this it sounds like "fine-wool challis" might be term you need to search for

justpoppngby · 09/02/2018 16:54

If my memory is right 😳 try looking for 'Challis' I believe it's a soft lightweight wool ..it's been a long time since I had some some though.

ElanorGamgee · 09/02/2018 17:01

Yes, challis is it. Stone fabrics sell a few different fabrics.

LaurieFairyCake · 09/02/2018 17:10

Thanks - off to google challis

It just has to be a lot cheaper than £140 Grin

TKMaxx always have those finely woven scarves in, in autumn. Don't know if they'd have them at this time of year though, likely all spring gear.

FlaviaAlbia · 09/02/2018 17:59

They have some in my local ones, I got my DM one for her birthday last time I was in.

Backenette · 09/02/2018 18:21

Not sure they have any in just at the mo, but fabric godmother do fantastic ex designer fabrics at a steal. Well worth cvcecking for quite unusual stuff regularly. Ditto fabrics as well.

Truro fabrics, stone fabrics, liberty all do nice wools. The liberty is worth the price

FlaviaAlbia · 09/02/2018 18:39

I've spent too much time browsing wool fabric thanks to this thread. I think I've even bankrupted my imaginary budget Grin
I definitely covet this one...

Fabworks too - great for wool including Avoca wools. I bought the raspberry parfait tweed before Christmas, it is beautiful. Close enough for me to drive to.
