Applique name onto nursery school smock

Can anyone please tell me the best way to do this? I have the fabric and have cut out letters in paper to trace onto the fabric, I know how to sew them on, do I need to use fusible bonding stuff for placement too? I'm not good at sewing so no idea if what I'm envisioning is correct...

TIA.

What fabric have you cut the letters out of? If it is liable to fray, I think the fusible bonding stuff would help minimise this.

Even if it's felt (doesn't fray) then fusible bonding stuff (bondaweb) makes it keep its shape better.

Iron on with bondaweb (if your smock can stand ironing temp!), then sewing on is a doddle.

If fabric can’t be ironed there is fabric glue. Without glue first appliqué is a fiddly nightmare.

Ah great tips, thanks so much! I'll buy some bondaweb.

I've got Liberty cotton for the fabric so it's pretty flimsy.
