Knitting tension question

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 06/01/2018 15:56

I’m making an Aran jumper. Needle size 5m and Aran weight yarn. Done the tension swatch, and it’s 4cm longer than it should be. I haven’t made a mistake and my tension is usually spot on. Why would it be so much bigger?

is it just a stocking stitch swatch? Aran pattern will surely thweek* the length up a bit with the cable-ing and fancy malarkey

*may have made up the word thweek but you surely get the gist.

I would drop the needle size .5 or 1 sometimes the thickness of Aran weight varies depending on the mix

I think MsHomeSlice is correct, do the swatch in one repeat of the pattern. If that fails I would assume printing error of the pattern as that is a big difference.

I’ve done it in a repeat as suggested on the pattern. I’ve done 4.5 and 4 mm, and still too big. I don’t think 3.5 m needle is normally used on Aran is it? Also if l do use that size needle won’t it use the yarn up faster?

I mean 3.75m needle

I don’t know what else to suggest as that does seem odd. I would imagine it would be quite hard to do the Pattern on that small a needle.

Are you using the wool brand that is stated in the pattern? I think there is often a difference in brands.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 06/01/2018 19:07

No, it’s a different wool, but I’ve checked the details of the tension on the suggested yarn, and my yarn and they say the same amount of stitches on 5mm needles for both.Confused

I think then that I would go with just a slightly smaller needle and carry on. I think that if there is a lot of cabling in the pattern it will pull it together and come out at the correct tension. Here’s hoping

I’ve contacted Rico for clarification😟wanted to start it tonight. Bought the most gorgeous Sublime luxurious tweed yarn. And now all l can do is stroke it until they respond😟

I’ve tested the swatch on 5 mm to the dimensions on the yarn hand. It fits that perfectly, so l guess it’s a misprint
