Afghan Cross-stitch

Thinking of making an Afghan blanket using cross stitch for a friend. As this will be my first one, experienced in cross-stitch though, it's a little bit daunting.

Has anyone done one? Where's the best place for fabric? How did you decide on the pattern/ pictures?

I know this is probably niche, but any help welcome.

Thanks

I couldn't find anything specific I really liked so found various alphabet letters with characters or things on and chose the one I liked best. I've started it now and am on 'G'

If you can crochet too I can link to a pattern for a Christmas tree skirt where you crochet 6 panels and then cross stitch pictures on - two of the twelve days of Christmas on each panel. Quite a niche craft Grin but it looks great when it's finished. I made one for the Woolly Hugs Christmas craft sale a couple of years ago.

Haven't crocheted in years, think I can only do basic stitch

This is the pattern in case anyone is interested. The background fabric is uk double crochet (us single crochet).
