Not much to add really! We live near some woods if that helps. Does he use soil to hold stuff in or blue tack? Does he 'transplant' real plants? As you can probably tell I'm totally clueless!

Could you use blu-tack to stick a few twigs and flowers in and then cover with soil to conceal the fact?

I used to make them when I was a child - I filled a shallow flat dish with earth & put some moss in for a 'lawn'
Does he need it to last? - in which case he could transplant real tiny plants - though you may have to be careful which ones you dig up in a wood.
If it's just for one day at school, you could just stick flowerheads in the moss & keep it damp. It would keep for at least one day.
You could put in a stone path & a mirror for a pond, with ducks on if you have any little ones.

I used to love making these, i used a seed tray, put some soil in the bottom, use moss, stones, silver foil for a pond (a duck on the pond made out of play-doh), twigs for tree's....

Thanks very much. As DS1 would say you've been ACE! We're off to the woods now so hopefully will have lots of things to fill it with. Must repeat to myself "I am NOT a competitive mum. It is my SON'S work not mine".

DS1 had to make one of these and one of the things that we did was grow some cress in the lid of a tub of butter and that was the grass. Stuck loads of bits and pieces from the garden in. Made some planters from yoghurt pots and 'planted' bits of trees in them. Chucked some glitter over the lot, it was supposed to be frost, we had great fun! Enjoy!
