Use words like "unusual" and "unique", say "I would never be able to make something like that". Laughing not a good idea IMHO.

I would try to think of something positive to say, without lying, too blatantly, like - wow did it take ou a long time, or i really like the colour etc squirm

if it is your 5 year old ds you say it is the bestest thing you have ever seen and keep it until the recycling people come round!

if it's a fun fur loo roll cover with googly eyes then stumped but otherwise comment on colour, idea behind it etc like when talking to a child
