If I want to knit a scarf like this or this what size needles do I need? 12mm?
Also what sort of wool, where do I get it from and how much do I buy for an adult's scarf. I have been searching on the internet but not had much luck.

www.loveknitting.com/malabrigo-mecha something like this would work, you'd want two or three skeins and 7 or 8mm needles

www.loveknitting.com/super-chunky-knitting-yarn#?colour=1842 or some cheaper multi colour superchunky yarns here

Thick yarns mean you don't get many metres to a ball though and scarves usually need to be quite long so don't underestimate how much you'll need

Thanks Yoni Smile

That's actually super chunky, so as MYFH says it would need at least 7mm needles.

As a rough guide the most common yarn thicknesses and corresponding needle sizes are

Baby - 2.5 - 3.5 mm
DK - 4 - 4.5 mm
Aran - 5 - 6 mm
Chunky 6 -7 mm
Super Chunky - 8 - 9 mm
Jumbo, t- shirt or thicker - 10 mm up to tree trunks! Wink

Obviously that's just an approximation, as knitting tension and how loose or tight knit a finish you're after need to be considered. Most balls of wool will suggest needle size on the band.

Happy knitting! Smile

Sometimes it’s thriftier to use multiple strands of thinner yarn eg these are 3 strands aran weight on 15mm

Thank you.
What did do you have a link to the pattern for the jumper in your first picture?

It’s my own pattern! Have made a few of these now, they are huge and so cozy. Very quick to make!

Back: Cast on 40 stitches, knit 2 purl 2 for a few rows (I did 4 rows on that one but six is better) then stocking stitch (garter stitch also fine if you prefer) until it’s the length you want, around 60-70 cm is what I aim for, bind off loosely ish. Front is the same but when you’re about 7 rows from the same length as the back knit (or purl, I think I did that one purlwise) 16 stitches then bind off 8 for neckline, then decrease one stitch on the collar edge every other row 3x and bind off (do this on each side of neck) that should take you to same length as the back piece. Sleeves were 20 stitches with same number Of k2p2 rows then stocking stitch, I did 3 increases (6 in total, one at each side 3x so 26 stitches) starting from about 10-15 rows - it’s such an enormous and unstructured thing it doesn’t really matter but obviously make a note so other sleeve matches, bind off when it’s the length you want. Sew it together- I used ladder stitch, surprisingly unbulky seams given all those strands!
