Can anyone help me with this tapestry?

My granny did a lot of tapestry and embroidery, and when she died, I was given lots of her UFOs. I'm trying to complete some of them to give as gifts to cousins. The embroidery is fine as my friend is helping, but I've one tapestry and I'm stuck on it!

I've attached a photo of what's completed so far. It's nearly complete, but I'm not sure how to fill in the gaps... has anyone seen a similar pattern that I could copy? Or can offer advice?

I have all the thread that she was using.

Looking at pansy tapestries it seems there are quite often little gaps between the flowers as on yours so its possible they are supposed to be there. You could always put in little areas of green shades for leaves? I couldnt find an exact match for your pattern though. I hope you get it finished. I love pansies!!!

Thanks piffy. Could you send me links to a couple of pansy tapestries? I couldn't find any pictures! You may be right about the gaps. I'm a bit scared to add in green in case it looks weird!

If the central pattern has been completed, a light background colour could be added.

Looking at the colours, a rose pink or a lighter shade than the canvas might work.

Some ideas for pansy tapestry cushion cover

It looks pretty finished to me in terms of the main design but those type of needlepoint are meant to have the background filled in too.
This is always done afterwards.
The difficult bit is choosing the right background colour that will make all the design colours stand out.
I usually use deep cream but that might not work with flowers at the top which are pale

Thanks everyone! There's a pile of tapestry thread here, but nothing that's in large enough quantities to do a background, so she maybe hadn't got to it yet.

Will try to do some leaves, I think, and see how it looks.

I would fill in the back in a strong colour in the hope it would have a more contemporary look. It is a lovely thing to compete her wips.

I don't do much tapestry, but when I did one a bit like that, I did the background in black (an idea copied from one I'd seen somewhere) and it worked well.

Great ideas, thanks!
