So, having broken my tiny portable sewing machine I have decided I should become a grown up and buy a proper sewing machine, but I need a cheap, small and easy to use one.
Help?!
It will be used for mending, sewing slings, hems, bags, toys etc....

(I know this should be in products but you look like the guys to ask!

will you use it for much big stuff?

if not, car boot sale, singer hand machine, about £20, plus about £30 for a service. they last forever and make good ornaments too.

No, I won't use it for big fancy stuff, I really only need a straight stitch or possibly zig zag for strength.
Are singers easy to use?

yes. you put the material in and turn the handle.

I asked for that, didn't I

I dunno - I've always had a hand one (actually my current one is a treadle) and I just love them. but some people swear by electric ones. It is a good idea to buy second hand rather than cheap though: cheap ones do tend to break down more easily.

I bought an all singing all dancing one new on Ebay from Joys sewing machines. Their basic models are about £50. Mine is great.

SenoraPostrophe · 12/04/2007 20:47

how long ago was that gow, and is it still working?

chirpygirl · 12/04/2007 20:49

£50 is too much, I have looked on ebay and there is a really old Singer for a fiver 5 miles from me...so am bidding on that I think, at least I can sell it on if it is no good!

I have always had electric ones but I'm sure I could manage without a footpedal tangling up in my feet!

SP - It was a christmas present and to be fair I've been studying, so haven't used it too much, but I am very pleased with it. It does everything including making the coffee. Well almost
