Knitting Novice wants good first project ideas!

Hiya, want to knit something for my 10month old son to wear that is relatively quick and easy (have knitted years ago when I was in brownies but not really since, hope its like riding a bike...lol!) Looked at some pattern books and everything looks either too complicated or too old fashioned. Want something bit modern, pref with thickish wool so it won't take too long, any ideas/links to patterns you can recommend?

hat? Blanket - easy but would take a while.

mittens. they only need to be a bit of knitting joined at one end

I thought of a hat but his Nanny (my mum) has knitted him a gorgeous one and don't want to not use it!!! Was thinking more tank top/cardigan type thing as he's nearly 1 but not sure where to find an easy pattern (or whether thats too adventurous for a first timer!)

does it have to be something to wear? i started out with a small cuddly rabbit for ds. quick and easy!!!
