Help needed to even up circle skirt hem (picture)

How the blazes can I even up this hem? It's a viscose fabric that I cut on the bias to make a skirt. It's been hanging a while now so think its time I hemmed it. Thing is I don't have a clue!

I've laid it out and measured a set distance from the waistband and marked with pins all the way around but I expected the pins to look a bit more even than they do.

Also confused by the fact that when I lift the skirt out to the side by the side seams (so it looks semi circular IFYWIM) the hem seems to match up fairly well.

Help!

Have you got somebody that could wear it while you hem it using their legs as a guide

EnidNextDoor · 19/08/2017 09:44

I have exactly the same problem so I shall await the holy grail of answers...

Wear it if you can, because your bum and tummy may affect how long it hangs on one side or another! Also if you have, for example, one hip higher than the other.

Anyone?

I tried the skirt on again and the hem definitely isn't uniformly even. I took out all the pins and pinned it again. This time doing just one half of the hem, and on the right side of the fabric.

The pins still aren't sitting level! Seriously considering taking it to a seamstress to just finish it off for me!

I feel your pain. Can you unpick the whole thing and start again with the fabric? It might be easier to straighten it before it is made into a skirt??? I have about 4 skirts in my sewing box and they have been there for about 4 years.........

You need something like this, my old Nan used to have one Smile

Out2pasture · 23/08/2017 02:43

other than getting a seamstress mannequin one way is to put it on and have someone measure from the floor up and get it all level while on your body.
your bottom will usually be a bit bigger than your tummy and if you sew the hem level (like mathematically level) then it will pull up and be shorter in the back than the front.

I have a chalk marker thing that sprays little puffs of chalk to mark the hem(very like Alright's nan!). Measuring from the waist isn't going to work, you need to measure from the floor to get it even. You've got a good start by letting it hang before hemming, you just need to find a way to mark it- can someone else measure and mark while you wear the skirt?

mimiasovitch · 25/08/2017 21:25

I use a chalk marker too - this is the reason I have one! I love circle skirts, but after resting they always end up a bit wonky. Without that you need someone you can trust to measure from the ground up to the level you want. A straight rule and some tailors chalk is all you need - no need to get them pinning.

EnidNextDoor · 25/08/2017 22:26

So you stand on a stool wearing it and someone measures up from the floor and marks it?

ZippyCameBack · 26/08/2017 20:02

Yes, Enid . That way you make sure it looks even. Or you can get one of the skirt hem marker things. They are fun!

EnidNextDoor · 26/08/2017 20:39

I have never heard of them. Where do you get them from?

ZippyCameBack · 26/08/2017 20:55

I got mine years ago and I can't remember where from, but if you search for "skirt hem marker" on ebay, you will see a selection. This one looks good;

Update! I caved and have put it into a seamstress to sort the hem. I just wanted to wear the skirt after making it nearly 2 months ago. Hopefully she will make a nice job of it.
