Quick crochet question

When crocheting a granny square with more than 1 colour and it says

Rnd 1: blah blah blah. Join with sl st in the top of beg cluster

Rnd 2: join new colour with sl st in a ch-sp. Blah blah blah...

How do you secure the old colour? I have just been doing kinda like another chain that I pull through quite a lot and then snip but this leaves a little bump bit sticking out. And then i join the new yarn seperately.

The bump doesnt really bother me but if there is a different way i should be doing it then that would be nice to know.

Thanks!

When you do the slip stitch it should leave you with a loop on the hook. Pull the wool to make the loop bigger and then pull the end of the wool through the hoop and pull tight to close. It shouldn't leave any kind of noticeable bump, especially once you sew the end in.

I may not have explained that very well - or it may be what you're doing anyway! But it's just the same as when you finish any kind of crochet - the fact it's changing colour doesn't make any difference.

Picture of the finished product?!

I use standing trebles:

Polter Ooh that's a good trick! Unfortunately im not doing trebles or a normal stitch (clusters) but good to remember for the future.

You can do any stitch as a standing stitch, for a cluster you'd just replace the chain 2/3/4 which counts as the first stitch with a standing stitch.

If I can be bothered I do an invisible join and then sew in the end.

Then I join the new colour with a standing stitch.

I always do last chain then as I start next level put hook through last stitch and then tie new colour to last one. In a knot then pull through. At the end I sew in the ends.

You just sort of weave it in afterwards if that make sense.

Just realised i was doing a dc instead of sl st! But thanks a lot everyone for the great tips
