Help with Easter hat.

DS1 (3yrs) & DS2 (9mths) have been tasked by nursery to make Easter Hats. We have been given a long piece of card, 60cms x 15cms and told that this is our starting point.
So far I have wrapped it round their heads and taped it - now what??
I am so stuck, I would have much preferred to have got a straw hat from somewhere and stuck things on but this is tricky. Any advice would be welcome.

Wellsie

Just had to do one myself! There are times when I just look at myself and think wtf am I doing?

I made a bunny if that's any help?

You could make a lid for the band, to make an actual hat.

Use the band to draw that sized circle on a piece of card. Then add a border a couple of centimetres wider and cut out. For the border bit only cut down to the original cuircle line to make lots of small tabs. Now stick onto the band using the tabs. You could do similar to make a rim for your hat at the bottom.

Then stick things over the hat.

Or if using just a band - turn into a rabbit or chick? Or stick a decorated Easter egg shape to the front of the band.

DS2 is on my profile wearing his. Very simple and started with a band of thin card!

wellsie click on name or the yellow clipboard thingy (between ! and envelope along the blue line).

Cut out easter egg shapes, get DS1 to stick stickers on or colour with a crayon, stick them round the edge. Voila. Keep it simple I say. They are only little. Plenty of time for stressing over it at infant school (you won't believe the competition!!).

Do easter eggs stuck to the front and let them colour them in. All their own work = easy for you.

Now how clever is that, thanks Tortoise and what great pics!! Love the hat, may just have to copy it
Gosh, 4 DC, You have got your hands full!! I'm originally from Taunton so know Somerset well - miss it but Gloucestershire isn't bad.
Thanks again, will have to update my profile now as nothing like yours.

Thanks. Hope you get the hats sorted.
They keep me busy!! Lol. Actually the older 2 are very helpful with the younger 2. Its just me and them though so they need to help out a bit!

i had to do that for dd's easter thingamy today. Got to the preschool and I was at the hats, her's looked so out of place as I had just cut a piece of A4 in half, made a band, stuck two egg shapes on either side and let her glue, stikc, glitter away until she'd had enough(she's 2.10)! Anyway the rest were all very very nice, must have been done by the parents and i was soooo embarrassed. It was y first time at one of these things so didn't know what everyone else makes.

Anywho, they had a little parade and announced the winners, one girl and one boy. Well you can guess what happened, they said the girl winner is the one with the bunny ears, there's me with everyone else looking merrily around thinking ahhh who's that. Then the preschool leader said that it was dd they were meant to be easter eggs!!!!!! I couldn't stop laughing. Not the fact that she'd won but that i hadn't realised it was her!!!!!!!

I still can't believe that the other kids had such lovely hats, but made by the parents. is it just me or should the child not make the hat, as much as they can? Surely that's the whole point

Thanks for your message Tortoise, didn't realise it was just you and 4 DC, I have no idea what that must be like - tough I suspect. Glad to hear that DS's help out.
I've now updated my profile, although cannot get pics to attach at the mo so will try another day.
Tomorrow we shall be tackling these Easter Hats, thanks to everyone for their posts, I think I know what we're going to do, lots of drawing & sticking!!
