Jersey fabrics for dressmaking - where from?!

Going to go insane trying to find nice jersey fabrics to make tops and dresses etc. Where do you get it from? Have visited a couple of local fabric shops but all they have is stiff fabrics for quilting or curtains..

Me too!! Any suggestions welcome! I tried mineva fabrics online - pretty good but could have a better selection. Xx

This site has wool jersey. If you live in/near London you can find plenty of fabric on Goldhawk Road near Sheperd's Bush, or in Soho.

The john lewis near me has a small but good quality selection of dressmaking fabrics including nice soft thick jersey. I've bought from Plush Addict online before and the fabric quality is fantastic,haven't bought Jersey from them though.

Oh and www.fabworks.co.uk have a whole jersey section. I have bought some super stuff for only £3 a metre. Worth getting on their mailing list/ Instagram as well as they have weekly specials.

Sorry am on phone so won't do links but as well as those already mentioned I have also used backstitch and dragonfly fabrics. I also have bought lots on eBay but that tends to be better once you are familiar with what the different fibre mixes are like as obviously you can't return them if they're not right. Minerva fabrics also has quite a lot of stretch fabrics but they don't have great customer service ime. Oh and John Lewis haberdashery usually have a selection.

I love fabworks, I live close enough to drive there but fortunately not so close that I go too often. Shaukat is much cheaper than Liberty for Liberty fabrics incl jerseys.

This thread is really helpful as I'm just getting back into sewing and fancied trying a few jersey knit patterns. How do you tell what the stretchiness is when buying online though? One pattern I have mentions a stretch factor - I can't remember the technical term - but how can I check this so I know I'm buying enough/not too much fabric?

It's rather tricky when buying online. They don't usually tell you explicitly in the listing, but if it's a decent shop as opposed to an ebay listing they should be able to tell you if you send them an email asking for some details. I have had success with many of the above shops doing this.
Often on ebay there is an element of take what you get, and it is cheaper. Usually you can find another project to use it in, if it doesn't suit your plans. As you get more familiar with the different fabrics you can often predict the feel and stretch. Sometimes the amount of stretch isn't pivotal (eg looser more flowy clothes, although for these the fibre content will have an effect on the look), but sometimes it is (eg leggings or other tight fitting items).

I also wanted to add that at my local hobbycraft they now sell a few bolts of jersey. Basic striped stuff in navy/white and red/white, but at £10 a metre it isn't too expensive.
