Spanish shawl into a kimono/jacket? Ideas please!

I've got an embroidered fringed silk Spanish shawl (huge size) I've had for years and I'd like to re-invent it as a kimono style cover up - ideally for a wedding on Saturday! I know I've seen them in vintage shops in Camden etc but am nowhere near enough to go to look this week. It would be perfect for this wedding.

Anyone done this? I've had a good google but can't find any ideas. Basically, am wondering if I can just slit it up to the centre, make some binding from similar coloured silk and go for it, sewing the sides up a bit like a kaftan. Does that sound silly? All ideas very very welcome!
