Which thread for a blanket?

I'm attempting to make the DC a camp blanket each for Scouts/Cubs/Beavers.

It essentially means making a poncho out of a blanket. This sounded like a good idea, but then I remembered I am totally shit at shit like this.

Blankets are bought now though so I'm going to give it a go. These are they: www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/textiles-rugs/blankets-throws/polarvide-throw-grey-art-50296990/

What thread do I need to do the blanket stitching? It needs to be a thread that's 'decorative' rather than just normal thread. I thought embroidery thread, but I don't want to shell out on that if it's the wrong stuff.

It needs to stop the neck hole getting wider and I might also have to do an outer edge (also not sure if I know how to do blanket stitch...)

I'd probably get a couple of balls of yarn - something like Stylecraft Special DK
