knitting patterns for retro toys?

I'm a novice knitter, currently knitting a slightly dodgy looking cardigan for my daughter. A friend is having a baby in September and I'd like to knit the baby something but not one of those "matinee jackets" that I was given 5 of when my kids were born (we never took them to any matinees).

Do you know where I could get a pattern for a retro-type toy - similar to the Grannimals?
