What to use - first sewing projects

Hi I am looking to make a basic skirt for DD (10) as a first project and wondered what the best fabric should be. I've look at some cotton in my local shops but they seem quite thin.

Also, I want to make some table mats for christmas, what should I use inside to make them heatproof? And if I make a matching tablecloth should I make it a double layer?

Thanks

Quilting cotton is great a t for kids skirts as it doesn't stretch or slip around and comes in lots of funky designs. Look for market stalls or online at places like the fabric guild.

For table mats you want thermal warding or interfacing. Again check the fabric guild they have a great range of US imports.

Thank you Kate, I'll have a look at their site.
