New to knitting, now what?

Hi everyone,

I have decided to give knitting ago and I have started knitting a blanket. All I know how to do is the normal stitch.
Where do I go from here? Any tips for great websites?

I do more crochet than knitting but there are lots of facebook groups for knitters, newbies included most folks are nice and welcoming,

I've recently learnt a pattern by watching a walk through on Youtube

and then if you have any local wool shops that have 'knit and natter' type days, its like big coffee mornings, you take your knitting, sit around drinking coffee, talking about whatever you fancy, there's always someone experienced to help if you need to learn a stitch, don't understand a pattern or have gone wrong/dropped a stitch.

Join Ravelry...it's free and has loads of free patterns. Plus you can see what yarns people have used for what patterns. Also Pinterest has loads of inspiration and links to good blogs.

You Tube is my best friend. I only knew how to do a basic stitch a couple of years back and through the wonders of You Tube tutorials I even made a cardi with a cable pattern last year. Probably wouldn't win any prizes for quality or speed, but I was pleased with it.

There's usually several videos with instructions for different types of stitches and I just watch until I find one that I can follow (I bookmark the good ones for when I inevitably forget the instructions).

Main thing is, have fun and don't get frustrated. I've had to undo hours of work before and start again

Practically all stitches are a combination of knit or pearl. Pearl us just knit on the otherwise really. So really you can do anything!
The biggest thing us to learn to decipher a pattern. It looks more complicated than it is. Many knitting shops run free knitting workshops. Also agree YouTube and revelry. Some designers blog about 'how tos' as well.
I am mostly self taught - started at the deep end with a friend I can ask.

I obviously need to learn to check my spelling though! Hope you can decipher it!

Yy Ravelry is brilliant and there are amazing tutorials on you tube.

There's a couple of styles of knitting and if you're just starting you could look at them, continental style is much easier on the hands I think. I've recently swapped to it and it's quicker too.

I have been knitting for 36 of my 40 years, and I regularly look things up on you tube! Especially new cast on techniques. My dd's find casting on the most tricky.

I'd practice simple increases and decreases, both picking up and knitting the loop between stitches (m1), and knitting into the front and back of a stitch (kfb), and knitting two together (k2tog, or ssk). Then you can tackle patterns with shaping.

Am trying to teach myself to follow a crochet pattern! It's hard, and lots of you tube tutorials needed, and I'm properly good at knitting stamps foot at messy crochet

Oh, I use pintrest a lot for pattern ideas, plus ravelry, and the ravelry spin off app called dirty needles too.
