Amazon and hobbycraft seem really expensive, has anyone got any suggestions as to where else I could look?

Actual wool or just cheap yarn? Woolwarehouse or Deramores (and look online for a discount code, or browse through a crochet/knitting magazine for an advert with a code).

Stylecraft Special DK is a highly recommended acrylic yarn.

B&M have chunky 100% wool for £2.99 in cream, camel and grey. Plus lots of acrylic blends, all under £4.

I've seen some in poundland not real wool obviously.

The pound land deal is 3 50g balls of acrylic DK for 2 pounds. It does squeak a little and I have noticed some thickness variation between colours.
