Headboard buttoning....anyone know how?

If I made a headboard with board, foam and a staple gun...how could I achieve a buttoned effect? How do you make sure that they don't fall off with the pressure and how do you fasten them?

Ooh, that's the kind of thing my mum would know, she made me a headboard once! I will ask for you!

I would of thought that you could just sew them on through the covering fabric and foam before you staple it all to the board - but I'm just guessing!!
