Any crocheters around? I could use a little help.

Hi there.
I am trying to crochet a colour block shawl/scarf type thing with three or four colours. My plan is to crochet a triangle as large as I feel it's appropriate, and then star decreasing until I get to the tip of the other end, so basically a diamond shape. Easy enough.

However, I am struggling to work out which my last stitch is every time I get to the end of the row. It is a pretty important stitch as it's the one where I have to increase. Equally, when I turn the work and I have to start with a dc on the first stitch, I am unsure I am doing this correctly.

I am getting a triangle shape, but some rows are a bit messy at the ends and I feel I might have missed the odd stitch here and there or perhaps increase too far? It doesn't seem to matter so much now the triangle is so small but if I continue like this it's going to look a right mess. So anyway, can anyone help me work this out accurately?

Possibly the easiest way is to put a stitch marker into the top of the first stitch of the row so you know where it is each time. You'll need two stitch markers,one for each edge, andjust move them up. A length of wool works just as well if you've not got a proper marker.

I would like the triangle to grow quite long so it doesn't get too wide too soon, so perhaps only increasing alternate rows. How do I do this?

I think if you only increased alternate rows it would only grow on one edge so you'd get a long straight edge on the "non increase" edge and a point on the other. A long, short triangle.

Oh okay. That might look a bit pants. I guess I'll just carry on with the standard triangle and let it grow until I've had enough. Thanks again soup.

I was hoping to achieve this sort of shape, although I don't want the holes, which is why I'm using single crochet:

I think that is pretty much flat along one edge.

In my mind it was being worked from narrow point to narrow point with the rows running vertically.

Any idea where I could get such a pattern?

Ah yes that's the sort of shape I'm after but would like the stitches tight (hence sc) not holey

With smaller stitches, it's going to grow in width quicker (because of the height of the stitches)

You could spend hours lost inthe Ravelry pattern database and coupe out with an arm load of patterns for other things :o
