any one know anything about cake decorating?

don't know if i am putting this in the right bit but any advice would be gratefully received!

im getting married next year and we are on a tight budget and having to save money in some areas, im making the bridesmaid dresses ( my posh girls school education is finally becoming useful!!)

i have also decided to sort of make my own wedding cake! well i know you can buy plain ready iced ones (i did dd christening cake myself) the christening one was easy as i handpainted the design on it but im wondering if the wedding cake might be more difficult.

does anyone know if you can by ready made iced flowers and where do you get them from. and where would i buy the stand things wrong

any suggestions would be gratefully received thank you

I'd try ebay for the stands - plain cakes can look very gorgeous and uberstylish decorated with real flowers. Maximum inpact minimum effort - wish I'd done it for mine would have saved a bundle

You can buy ready done iced flowers and stick them on a cake yourself - I'm sure all specialist cake decorating shops will sell them.

Our local cake decorating shop also sells fruit cakes (uniced), that you can ice yourself - which is even cheaper. I think to be honest buying a plain ready iced cake may not be that much cheaper than buying it all done. Could you not ice it yourself with the roll-out icing. The roll out stuff you get from a cake shop is a million times nicer than supermarket versions and it is what the cake shops use when they do wedding cakes.

I iced my own wedding cake and my sisters. My Grandma made the friut cakes and then I used nice roll out icing from a cake decorating shop as Tenby girl suggested. I made iced flowers from a Jane Asher book for the edges of my sister's cake and real flowers the same as her bouquet on top. For in I used fake ivy round the sides and left it really plain as we got married at xmas. Local cake decorating shops to us sell sugar flowers and things so if you shop round you might find something.

We got married last year and bought two ready made and iced cakes, one fruit, one sponge, and put them together ourselves. The cakes cost £10 for the large fruit one, from M&S, and £6, I think, for the smaller sponge one from Tesco. The stands/legs for them cost about £2, the bride and groom were about the same, and we scattered edible rose petals over the whole thing and the base.

The cakes were already decorated, and although there were slight differences in the designs, it wasn't noticeable. The whole thing looked lovely, and no-one knew it was shop-bought until we told them, whereupon everyone started confessing that their cakes had been ready-mades!

I would look on the internet - a lot of suppliers of sugar flowers are much cheaper than local cake shops. Try Almond Art or Squires Kitchen, but stay away from Jane Asher, she is v overpriced. Also, see if you can pick up a book on assembling sugar flowers (AA sell them too) as it will help you to assemble the decoration. This method will be a lot cheaper than a bespoke cake.

We went to wedding last year where the bride made the wedding cake, it was really simple to make and looked quite stunning. The sides were covered in white chocolate cigarellos and had white chocolate malteasers on the top of the cake and just one fresh red rose to decorate, looked lovely and no icing to worry about

thanks for all the tips, have looked at the almond art site and it has everything i need! doing it this way is going to save so much money!!

you can also hire the cake stands & a posh knife to cut it with if you live near a good cake shop - just get someone else to be willing to drop it back afterwards.

We too had a plain 3 tier cake with fresh blood red flowers & greeen foliage between each tier - it looked stunning.
