repairing a basket

Hello - I have a nice square hinged basket, on a wooden frame and lined with fabric that we use as storage in ds's room - however, where he opens the lid and reaches across the wicker has all frayed and is coming apart. Does anyone have an suggestions as to how to repair it? I did wonder about sewing it neatly with string but a) where do I find "nice" string and b) where do I find a needle thick enough to use (preferably available online - we are not v close to a major town)? Or does anyone have a better idea?
TIA

Bumping this just in case anyone has any ideas? I'd really like to save the basket
