Advice on what to pay for photography

Looking for your thoughts, please. We have asked a friend of ours to take some photos of us with our baby. She's an amateur photographer and I'm not sure if she ever does paid-for work.

I asked about payment and she was quite reluctant to ask for any. I really want to give her something as she will be giving up her time and she is obviously saving us professional fees.

What do you think would be a reasonable amount to offer her? Im guessing the 'shoot' will take 1-2 hours.

She's obviously not sure enough of the results to charge. I'd just give her some wine or a voucher at the session. You should also let her use the photos on her website or in publicity, if she is thinking of turning professional.

Thanks Beachy. I think it's more that she's the kind of person who would feel uncomfortable asking a friend for money. I'll just try to have a frank conversation with her

Please pay her, so many amateur photogs are offered experience and exposure as payment and while these things are valuable, no one would think it acceptable to pay a joiner or a roofer in the same way.
Is she going to edit the photos? An average photo shoot could result in 200-300 photos so she's looking at a lot of editing time on top of the shoot.
I would think £50 for the shoot and editing and the resultant photos. Amateur or not, she deserves to be paid for her art

Hi cakes thanks for your message. I totally agree and that's why we want to pay. We have done the photography session now and our friend edited the pics and sent them on - they are wonderful.

We thought £60 so I'm glad that's in line with your suggestion.
