Hats for 5lb baby

Sorry I want to knit a couple of little hats for a friends baby who will hopefully arrive safely during the week. She won't be more than 5lb. I've started and ripped a couple of times already as the sizes don't look right.

Anyone done any hats for that size, i'm using double knitting and firstly cast on 64sts then ripped and cast on 50 but I can't judge.

I've tried on Ravelry but cannot figure out the sizes on there either. i'm doing the ones that roll up outwards rather than a rib that might be tight.

Prem baby hat:

4mm needles & Baby DK

Cast on 48 stitches
Rib 10 rows
St st 20 rows
Knit 2 tog across k rows, purl across purl rows until 6 stitches left.
Needle through 6 stitches and sew down the seam.

If you want it to roll up, then just st st, maybe a garter stitch edge. They do not seem too tight though, as you use the same size needle all the way through.

I don't like knitting hats in the round so I use two needles and seam it up the back.

Bugger - cocked up the link! Blush

Try again...

Also if you google Project Linus they have prem/tiny baby sized hat patterns

Thanks a mil lads, that's great. Was thinking the 50 sts was too small but having had only 9lb'ers i'm not a great judge.

Sorry Woolyback that link doesn't work for me. But I can search emmamartha I think.

I had a 5lber and ended up with knitted hats etc from the ward as none of the ones we brought fitted! Local hosp gets knitted stuff donated by craft groups and was so grateful! At 12 weeks he's now at 13 lb 7oz monster :)

That is nice - I knitted bagfuls of the above pattern with my knitting group. They are very cute. Thought it was good for them to have new hats each time, and to take home. They do not look so good when they have been through the hospital's wash Sad.

My DTDs wore a lot of handknits in SCBU. [nostalgic]

Another friend just text and said that if they fit a baby born doll they should fit is that a good indicator? Shock

we're in Ireland and I don't think there are donated hats in the hospital here. It's a lovely idea. Tallulah did you keep a hat and put it next the ones that fit now?
