I have seen some nice fabric in a huge pattern and wish to make blinds with it

I don't know how to do this

I don't know how to make a blind

what I should measure

how much fabric to buy

how to hang it up

or anything else involved in the process

However I do have a sewing machine which I can use, and a willing smile

I thought it was going to be relatively easy

I once saw a blind pattern in a magazine in four easy stages

I used to make clothes and follow patterns

Is it a whole different ball game?

Funnily enough, have just moved into a house and was trying to fix the one and only blind they left in the place. Looks like Roman blinds are easy to make.

The one in my house is fixed to a narrow rectangular block at the top. Each "fold" of the blind is clipped onto a dowelling rod by means of what looks like a ready made "clip" which attaches to the string. Seems as though the "clips" would be available in haberdashery shops.

Am now thinking of making some myself as the actually sewing part is just hemming the material. You just need to work out how much extra fabric you need for "folds" in the blind.

its not that hard
some fabric/haberdashery shops have kits which make it easier as well.

i did find instructions once online so maybe if you google u might find some.

or the library might have a book - i have the good housekeeping sewing book.

If you are making a roman blind, with folds i wouldnt use a big pattern, as it will look odd, when up!

google "roman blind how to make" and youll see lots of step by step instructions. You need time and patience.

Make a mini size rough one about the size of pillow case to practice on. Save wasting your money on lovely fabric incase you go wrong.

i have made them but too complicated on here to explain. Good luck.

Oh it's a doddle !!!

Basically get a roman blind kit (online) and that supplies the tapes, strings, mechanism and the rids. Then you make a lined square to fit the window - bag method like curtains - then turn the right way round - iron and finish off.

Then you sew the tapes on, slide the rods in, put the mounting up, string it up and Bob is definitely your uncle !!

Trickiest bit for me was the measuring for the tapes and deciding how I wanted it to look when up - you can do different types - one kind of cascades down and the other completely folds up on itself iyswim ?
