How to make a painting overall?

I need to furnish 4 year old with a painting overall for Kindergarten. Has to have elasticated cuffs, they advise a man's shirt with sleeves cut to length. Except DH has no shirts he is willing to part with and I'm not going to buy a shirt just to mangle it. Can't be a plastic one which is all they seem to sell. Is there any reason I shouldn't buy a cheap, long sleeved (woman's) t-shirt and just shorten the arms? And is that easy to do? I'm thinking cut sleeve, fold back enough to put elastic in and sew around. Why would they specify a man's shirt?

or buy one on Amazon? they aren't all plastic though some are plastic fabric.

even a women's shirt will surely be too big for a 4 year old, but maybe you could get an 8 year old size shirt in a charity shop & shorten the sleeves?

The only ones I saw at ikea were plastic ones. It's not allowed to be plasticy or anything that the paint could run off from onto the floor. And it has to be large enough the child can get it on and off easily by themselves (over their clothes).

When we had these at school we wore men's shirts, only backward and with only the top button done up, that might be what they're going for. A women's t-shirt would have to go over the head, and that might not be what they want. Maybe they specified men's shirt because more men than women wear shirts to work, so families are more likely to have an old/worn one of those lying around?

What abput buying a cheap basic man's shirt from a supermarket and altering the sleeves the way you're suggesting, OP?
