Weight of quilt

I've been given some material by MIl to make something for DS so have decided to attempt to make him a quilt. He is far too hot in the summer under his summer weight duvet and the cotton blanket we have for him is not enough. I've found some batting that I can get hold of, which is called "quilters dream cotton" and comes as low, mid or high loft. I've never had a quilt before, so I've no idea what that translates to in warmth. Can anyone advise?

From what I'm reading the 'loft' refers more to the density of the wadding than warmth specifically. Lighter loft is going to be easier to stitch thru, so 'low' is your best choice.

I have used Hobbs heirloom and that's less "warm" than my half of summer duvet, on my kingsize one, but then also seems to be super cosy in winter - I've also used a bamboo mix which is lovely too. These are the best I've found for machine sewing. I've not tried the one you suggest above, but if it's a good quality wool or cotton it will be lovely.

The polyester stuff is evil... Yuck yuck yuck IMO.

I've made a couple of quilts using "simply cotton" batting. My children are sleeping under them now so as summer weight covers they are ideal. In winter they layer their quilts over their duvets. They also wrap themselves in their quilts for movie night, bundle under them for long car journeys, use them to make dens... You won't regret making one. Nothing better than looking in on your sleeping child and seeing them curled up in a home made quilt.

I've used Simply Cotton batting for my kids' quilts too, and backed mine with brushed cotton

My kids like to snuggle under something, even when it's really hot and their quilts are just about right at the moment.

And as Wildcherryblossom above, my kids snuggle under them for movie nights, layer over duvets in winter. My youngest took hers on her year 6 residential trip to France as she was a bit nervous and it was something she could snuggle into if she felt a bit homesick. It's lovely

Interesting the batting is getting good reviews here, I shall have to look into it :)

I'm a massive fan of the bamboo but it's so expensive! I order my Hobbs from the US takes forever to get here but save about 50% on UK prices

Hi Kittens I have spotted Bamboo batting at £12.99 per meter (90") wide on Amazon. I think I have paid about £10 for Simply Cotton before. Was thinking of trying that or 50:50 cotton:bamboo for my next quilts. (Trying to get several quilt tops finished before I order a load of batting)

PS like EllyBellyBoo I am a fan of brushed cotton for backing. Makes it more cosy without being too heavyweight. I used a heavier plush type backing for one and my son loves it as it is extremely soft but it was a beast to quilt on my small domestic sewing machine. Brushed cotton is much easier to work with.

Wow! Thank you all for the response. Yes, it is the first time I've tried a quilt. I'm in the middle of making a play mat for DD which is the first thing I've ever attempted on my sewing machine beyond hole repairs. I shall definitely go for cotton batting, will order the light one then. I did look at a bamboo one, but its way out of my price range!

I'll ask for some advice then, what's the best way to to sew in the panel I have for him? I've not yet got the rest of the fabric for the top (because the matching one is too expensive!), but am thinking of looking for a plain black or deep blue. The underside of the quilt will be the fabric that MIL wanted.
