What to look for in beginners sewing course

That's it really!

I learned to see very basically from my mum and at school. I really do want to properly learn to sew now for myself and the DC. I would also LOVE to make quilts but that's probably a bit advanced for now!

I don't have a machine but would be interested in purchasing but don't want to make an expensive mistake.

Any thoughts? I've seen some courses round my way but I'm not sure how best to pick. I'm in Aus by the way or would just go to Adult Ed as my dearly missed GDM went to all her life!

I'd book myself onto a dressmaking course first. Learn how to dressmake and you probably won't need a course in quiltmaking....you'll be able to follow online tutorials alone because the skills you'll get from a dressmaking course will be very useful and broad.

I learnt to quilt first :)

Lots of online courses and as long as you can sew in a straight line then any basic machine will work out fine for quilting a basic quilt.

I am now on dressmaking which is far more complicated!

The best quilt to start with is a simple square quilt, I will post more details tomorrow as really do need to sleep but can post or link to a step by step guide to quilting your first quilt if you like?

Which state are you in? My cousin is a quilter.

I'm in WA :)

Thank you so much for posting everyone.

I don't do very well with online courses as I don't have the discipline to do it. Turning up somewhere for a few hours once a week keeps me honest!

Really annoyingly the great tutorial for a square quilt link I had has now disappeared :(

Am tying to find another one, if not I am making one this week so will make a blog/step by step instructions on how I do it

A square quilt is really simple and they turn out lovely :)

KittensandKnitting · 18/07/2016 22:48

Oh I also meant tutorials not courses :) for the quilts

KittensandKnitting · 18/07/2016 22:54

Me again Grin

So I found a link to the instructions but it does not include the pictures :( I will do one later in the week, I follow a very similar method to this and it's super simple for a beginner.

I made my first quilt on a £50 sewing machine, it had about five stitches on it, so nothing fancy at all. I know have a super sewing machine which I adore, so if you get the sewing bug you may end up poor :)
