Crotchet wool advice

Hello, I am just starting out with learning to crotchet, and am making a blanket using basic crotchet stitches using a thick wool and 10mm hook.

I have been to Hobbycraft and they only had a small selection of chunky wool, does anyone have any recommendations for other wool shops?

I use wool wharehouse not got super chunky but lots of others. Very good service and fast

Attic24 (google it!) is a really good crochet blog and has links to a wool shop.

A greater starter yarn is Stylecraft Chunky or if you want wool (i.e. not acrylic) yarn, maybe Drops Eskimo.

Wool warehouse are good - do you have a local fabric/wool shop then you can get a feel of the wool?

It might be easier to learn on a smaller hook as large hooks can be a but unwieldy. Definitely give it a go - you'll be hooked before you know it :o it's so satisfying snuggling under a blanket you've made yourself.

Ooh thank you for the quick response! I initially tried using a 4mm and tried granny squares, but really struggled and got so frustrated!! So I got thicker wool and hook and am finding it much easier, but I haven't tried the granny square again yet as I wanted to master the basics!

Black sheep wools (in store and online) and deramores (online) are very good. If you know what wool you want it's always worth trying eBay too.

I wouldn't use Drops Eskimo unless making something to felt.

I can't really think of anything I've used a 10mm hook for. Stylecraft Chunky is good as someone else said. Drops Big Merino is good too, but more expensive as its wool.

I use Lily Sugar and Cream to crochet in most of the time because I like the cottons and this is the least likely to split. Lots of my friends like style craft DK but I can't bear the feel of acrylic.
The range has a good selection of acrylic wool and also Boyes if you have one anywhere near has a brilliant range of wool and hooks.

If you follow the crochet crowd or yarnspirations on Facebook you'll get some great ideas. But avoid like the plague Bernat blanket super chunky, it's full if knots and really horrible to crochet with

Wool warehouse also send your wool in a lovely drawstring bag. I love that. When you move on to smaller hooks try mercerised cotton. You can see each stitch really clearly. Tiger Tiger also v do some good chunky wool and Teeshirt yarn.
